These chubby mushrooms are so cute! This pattern is great because you can make the top of the mushroom any color you want! This would be a great pattern to use any variegated yarn you have. Underneath the mushroom’s cap is a cool texture by using front post double crochets.

    Mushroom:

Start in Hat Color (Brown or Red)

    Round 1: 6 Sc into a Magic Ring (6)
Round 2: *Inc* all around (12)
Round 3: *Inc, Sc in the next st* all around (18)
Round 4: *Inc, Sc in the next 2 st* all around (24)
Round 5-6: *Sc* all around (24)
Round 7: *Inc, Sc in the next 3 st* all around (30)
Round 8: *Sc* all around (30)
Round 9: *Inc, Sc in the next 4 st* all around (36)
Round 10: *Sc* all around (36)
Round 11: *Inc, Sc in the next 5 st* all around (42)
Round 12: *Inc, Sc in the next 6 st* all around (48)
Round 13: *Inc, Sc in the next 7 st* all around (54)
Round 14: *Inc, Sc in the next 8 st* all around (60)
In rounds 15-18 we will work by making double crochets. When you see “Dec”, you will actually be making a double crochet decrease.
Double crochet decrease: Yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through two loops.
Yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have 4 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through two loops. You will have three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through three loops. You have completed a double crochet decrease.

Round 15: Change to cream color. In the BLO repeat *Dec, Dc in the next 8 st* (54)
Now we will make front post double crochets. To make a FpDc over a Dc Dec, just insert your hook behind where the Dc Dec becomes one stitch as shown.

Round 16: Repeat *FpDc Dec, Dec in the next 7 st* all around (48)
Round 17: *FpDc Dec, Dc in the next 6 st* all around (42)
Round 18: *FpDc Dec, Dc in the next 5 st* all around (36)
Round 19: Working in the FLO, *Sc* all around (36)
Round 20: Working in BOTH loops, *Inc, Sc in the next 5 st* all around (42)
Round 21: *Inc, Sc in the next 6 st* all around (48)
Round 22: *Inc, Sc in the next 7 st* all around (54)
Lightly stuff the top of the mushroom, not stuffing the flatter cap part of the mushroom. Stuff the top lightly because too much stuffing will misshapen the mushroom’s top.
Round 23-25: *Sc* all around (54)
Now we will mark where to place the safety eyes. Add a different colored stitch marker in the 15th and 20th stitch in Round 25. Later we will replace these with safety eyes.
Round 26-29: *Sc* all around (54)
Add the eyes into the marked areas.
Round 30: *Dec, Sc in the next 7 st* all around (48)
Round 31: *Dec, Sc in the next 6 st* all around (42)
Round 32: Working in the BLO, *Dec, Sc in the next 5 st* all around (36)
Round 33: Working in BOTH loops, *Dec, Sc in the next 4 st* all around (30)
Round 34: *Dec, Sc in the next 3 st* all around (24)
Stuff the cream part of the mushroom now.
Round 35: *Dec, Sc in the next 2 st* all around (18)
Round 36: *Dec, Sc in the next 1 st* all around (12)
Round 37: *Dec* all around (6)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the remaining stitches closed and weave in ends. Cut any excess yarn.

    Smile:

    In Black Embroidery Thread

Insert needle into the middle area of the toy as shown (Pic 1) and pull needle out at the left of the toy’s eye as shown (Pic 1). Reinsert needle into the middle of the toy (Pic 2) and pull needle out next to the toy’s right eye (Pic 2). Reinsert needle into the middle of the toy as shown (Pic 3) and pull needle out nearby. Tie ends of thread into firm knots and bring knots inside the toy to hide. Cut any excess yarn.
